Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect when going to my first therapy session?

The first session will you give you a chance to speak about what is bothering you or anything you think is relevant to allow the therapist to understand you. There is no need to prepare anything or come to therapy with anything special in mind. Just speak honestly, and your therapist will help guide the conversation. Skill, techniques, and readings may be used to help you understand and manage your symptoms throughout therapy.

What types of questions is the therapist going to ask me?

The therapist will likely ask you about your life history, current circumstances, your history of symptoms and what has led you to seek therapy at this time. Often therapy will involve speaking about painful or anxiety provoking topics. You never have to share anything before you are ready. One of the most healing parts of therapy, however, is facing and accepting difficult things.

Do you take insurance?

Thriving Point does take insurance using out of network benefits. You can check with your provider to see if you qualify for out of network benefits. We can provide superbills upon request.

Do you have a wait list?

No, Thriving Point does not currently have a wait list. You can call 864-958-8416 to schedule an appointment the same day or schedule via our online scheduling tool below for a next day appointment.

Will therapy change me?

You may find that as your symptoms reduce you have greater clarity in terms of recognizing your wants, needs and emotions. No therapy can fundamentally alter your personality unless you actively work towards the goal of personality change. Your efforts, motivation and diagnosis will determine the level of symptom relief and changes you experience.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

Session length depends upon the condition being treated, the severity of your symptoms and the motivation you have to change. Some conditions are manageable and some conditions are curable. Most rounds of cognitive-behavioral therapy last anywhere between 4-25 sessions. A therapy that addresses multiple diagnoses or works on deeper seated difficulties may last longer than 25 sessions. Longer therapies are the exception and not the rule.

How much improvement should I expect?

Improvement will depend upon the condition treated, the severity treated and your engagement with exercises outside of sessions. Some conditions you can expect almost complete relief such as specific phobias and panic disorder and other conditions need to be consistently managed such as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

What is cognitive-behavioral therapy?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a series of different therapies that focus on improving quality of life and mental health by teaching you to modify your thoughts, regulate your emotions, and change your behaviors. Particular therapies within CBT work best for different conditions. At Thriving Point a variety of different CBT tools are used.

Is medication or therapy better for my problems?

Some conditions require a combination of medication treatment and therapy whereas other conditions can be treated with therapy alone. For example conditions such as bipolar disorder require medication management in combination with therapy. Severity of condition is also important to determining the need for medication management. Thriving Point uses psychometric tests and clinical assessment to determine whether a referral to a prescribing clinician is recommended.
